Meteorology 1111 - Laboratory Syllabus

Orientation in Professional Meteorology, Fall 2002

Purpose

The laboratory section of this course is designed to help you develop skills that will be useful to you as a professional meteorologist. It will provide an introduction to fundamental meteorological principles and the tools used to monitor them.

Course Structure

Each class will begin with a 45-55 minute guest speaker lecture. After a short break, the laboratory lecture will take place for 20-30 minutes. Finally, a quiz will be given at the end of the class period.

Homework Assignments

Check the course web page after each class for your next homework assignment. One assignment will be posted each week. Each assignment is due at the beginning of the next class. Please come to every class period on time, and turn in your homework on the way in. Once the speaker begins talking, no more homework assignments will be accepted.

Reading Assignments

Reading assignments from The Weather Book by Jack Williams (published by USA Today) are posted on the course web page. You should read the required material before the next class.

Quizzes

The quiz each week will cover the previous week's guest lecture, laboratory lecture, and the last reading assignment. Quizzes will also count as your attendance for the day. Attendance is mandatory.

Grading

Each laboratory homework assignment is worth 20 points and will be graded on a 0 to 20 point scale. Each quiz is worth 10 points and will be graded on a 0 to 10 point scale.

Homework assignments will count for 75% of your final grade and the quizzes will cover 25% of the final grade. No late homework assignments will be accepted, and there will be no make-up quizzes given for unexcused absences. I will drop the lowest homework assignment and quiz grades before calculating the final grades. This course is based on the typical college grading scale: A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60-69%, F = 0-59%.

Attendance

Attendance for this course is mandatory, especially since this class meets only once per week. One unexcused absence is permitted, which is consistent with allowing one homework and quiz grade to be dropped. However, subsequent unexcused absences will result in a zero grade in the homework and quizzes.

There is no penalty for excused absences. If you miss a class due to medical reasons, please have your excuse signed by a physician.

Academic Misconduct

Academic misconduct is defined as any act that improperly affects the evaluation of a student's academic performance or achievement. All faculty at OU expect academic integrity from each student. Disabilities

Any student in this course who has a disability that may prevent him or her from fully demonstrating his or her abilities should contact me personally as soon as possible so we can discuss accommodations necessary to ensure full participation and facilitate your educational opportunities.
