One of Dr. Straka's research interests is validating microphysical parameterizations used in numerical cloud models with observed data via a new algorithm he developed, which determines hydrometeor type and amount using data from dual-wavelength polarimetric radar, and Doppler radar. This work supports his other research studying hail growth and storm electrification. Another emphasis of his current research is intializing cloud/mesoscale numerical weather prediction models with data from a variety of sources, including single and dual Doppler radar, and dual-wavelength and polarimetric radar. Finally, he continues work studying and observing tornadic thunderstorms, most recently as co-director of the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment (VORTEX). As part of VORTEX he played a major role in developing and deploying a mobile mesonet and a mobile radar.
