Tips for High School Students

  • Highly recommended high school course work should include the following mathematics courses: Algebra I, Plane Geometry, Algebra II, and Trigonometry. AP Calculus is also very advantageous, but not necessary.
  • Meteorology credit will be given starting with Calculus I ( Math 1823 ). Any students placing into a course lower than Calculus I will not receive meteorology credit for such courses. However, OU will give credit for several remedial math courses.
  • High school science coursework should include: 1 year of Chemistry and 1 year of Physics. For those considering a minor in physics, the requirements for a physics minor may be found here.
  • Students will be given the Compass mathematics assessment test prior to enrollment. Be certain to study the previously listed mathematics courses. For the COMPASS Study Guide, click herepdf. The mathematics and science courses listed above will help ensure your success in our rigorous program.
  • It would be advantageous to take a campus and department tour and arrange for a departmental interview. Prospective Student Services offers campus tours each weekday at 9:00 am and 2:00 pm.
  • Tours of NSSL are sometimes available by appointment or on specific days. Visit the NSSL Tour Webpage for more information (see map).
  • After taking physics, calculus and first semester junior classes, you'll be ready to tackle problems like this onepdf from Atmospheric Dynamics I.
  • OU offers advanced placement credit for several courses in our curriculum for those who have scored well on CEEB tests. CLEP and IB credits are also available. In addition, it is possible to receive OU credit by taking advanced standing exams.
