April 22nd, 2004 : Dirt Road Bonanza Yields
Last Chance
Chase Partners: Roger Graham, Justin, Troy Bell
Base: (none)
SPC Outlook: Moderate
Yet another Moderate Outlook day, only this time no tests were
going to hold people back. I wasn't going to chase initially, but Roger
gave the invite, so I decided to go. We headed out east on Highway 9 from
Norman. We are in the cumulus field just waiting around for something to
initiate. Some towers are trying to go up to our north, so we take State
Road 56 north. We see a decent/crappy looking Supercell that had just
gone up to our east. We could see the tower up by Tulsa (which
tornadoed). We stuck with our storm and watched it in Castle, OK. We run
into Chad and Aaron, Val drives by, and Jim and Simon make a quick guest
appearance. We decide to go east on this dirt road that leads to State
Road 56 northward. Well, we go down this dirt road and intersect a paved
road. We think it is State Road 56. In actuality, it was N3740 Road.
Aaron and Chad take the road north and end up figuring out they made a
mistake. Our car did not find fault until it is heavily raining and
lightly hailing in Last Chance, OK (which consists of 1 church and a
mobile home).
The sign said State Road 56. But we already crossed 56. We
were in a confused rage. We went north which took us to Haydenville and
Okfuskee. We had no clue what the situation was and heavy rain continued
to fall. Roger called the maproom and asked if there was any way to get
out and the person said we were in a bad spot. No freaking DUH! We
eventually decided to drive east to Okmulgee. A detour somehow ended us
up in Henryetta. We had given up, after being lost so much of the day.
Time to go home and hope for the better tomorrow.
