April 23rd, 2004 : Loco Warning Chase
Chase Partners: Kiel Ortega, Shane Young
Base: (none)
SPC Outlook: Moderate
WArning chase, pure and simple. A storm had crossed the Red River in southwest Oklahoma and
looked very impressive. I called Shane and told him we had decided to go check it out, and as Kiel got gas,
Shane arrived at Sarkey's and we left. We went down I-35 and got off on State Road 7 to go west to meet the
storm. We wanted to get a bit south of the storm instead of being on the Northeast side of the storm the
whole time. So, State Road 76 fit the bill and we went through the wonderful town of Fox, OK. THey had
quite an original mascot for the school (a high school, I believe). The Fox High School Foxes. Imagine
that. We chose State Road 53 to go further west. That yielded us to be pretty far away from the storm, but
we still saw an impressive wall cloud, and what we thought was a lowering. Excited, we got in the car and
raced east trying to find a north road, and never really found one. And when we got back to 53 and went
north a bit, the lowering was gone. Boo.
We did, however, get to go through Loco, OK twice!
