April 30th, 2004 : Lean Green Hailing Machine

Chase Partner: Kiel Ortega
Base: (none)
SPC Outlook: Moderate

Never before have I seen the skies so green than on this day. Scientifically, there has not been many studies on this phenomenon, though there are some theories. Anyways, this chase entailed from basically seeing on the RADAR that a pretty good looking storm had gone up in Northern TX and once again moved into OK.

Kiel picked me up at my place after getting his camera and such up in Moore and we took off on I-35. We got off on U.S. highway 70 and headed east. We encountered some pretty low mammatus from an LP and started getting some anvil rain. We darted over to Wilson and turned south on State Road 76. Surveying the LP, it was sucktacular. We heard there was an even larger storm with tornado warnings on it further southwest, heading towards Ryan. We decide to go west on this dirt road that went through Orr, OK. We then take State Road 89 down to State Road 32 west toward Ryan. We would have loved to get a little further south to be in a better position to see some of the features a bit better, but we were near the Red River, which has very few roads that cross it in that area.

So we just played the game of whenever the coldie pool came, we moved further east. There were plenty of CG strikes in the area, which was quite worrisome. However, we were still standing on hills near telephones. Idiots. We stopped basically when one in cloud strike cracked very close to us. We finally decided to leave the storm on I-35 south to avoid most of the hail. We then turned north and went home.
