News and Recent Events

On this page I will post news stories, events, observations, game updates, links to online articles, etc. involving Tim.

9-23-01 --- The Chargers defeated the Cowboys today by the score of 32-21. Tim Dwight had two receptions for 88 yards (including a 78-yard catch, the longest of his career!) and one rush for 16 yards and a touchdown. That score came on a reverse, as Tim ran to the sideline and cut upfield to the endzone. Recaps of the game can be found here (courtesy of Chargers.com) and here (courtesy of ESPN.com). San Diego is now 2-0, and tied for the division lead with Denver. It is obvious that the Chargers are trying to involve Tim in their game plan as much as possible, hopefully we can expect many more performances like today!

9-19-01 --- The NFL announced today that Tim Dwight has been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for week 1. Congrats Tim! Chargers.com has a short article on it here.

9-10-01 --- In yesterday's Washington/San Diego game (the season opener), Tim Dwight had an 84-yard punt return for a touchdown (!) and two receptions for 31 yards. He was also the target of a touchdown pass in the second half, but was interfered with in the endzone and the Chargers got the ball on the one yard line. Tim's punt return not only opened the eyes of Chargers fans everywhere (I could just imagine the chorus of "Who is that guy?", hehe), but also means that both times he has gone to a "new" NFL team (including his rookie year with the Falcons), he has scored a touchdown the first time he's touched the ball! There is an article on Chargers.com about Tim's performance, it can be found here.

8-30-01 --- An excerpt from another article on Chargers.com: "Barring any unforeseen developments in the preseason finale at Arizona Friday night, the top three [wide receiver] positions will be taken by returning starters Jeff Graham and Curtis Conway and punt-kick returner Tim Dwight, who has been entering the game as the team’s third wideout."

8-30-01 --- An excerpt from a recap of last weekend's St. Louis/San Diego game on Chargers.com: "Despite not getting the ball into the end zone, Flutie and wide receiver Tim Dwight continued to show their growing chemistry in the second quarter. With linebacker London Fletcher bearing down him, Flutie tossed a pass in Dwight’s direction, who deftly stopped in front of a Ramsdefender and made the catch for a 21-yard gain. Late in the second period the pair connected again for a 19-yard gain. Both plays were good for third-down conversions."

8-14-01 --- Today was a good day for Tim Dwight news online. I found three articles in which Tim is mentioned, and he's the Chargers.com Player of the Week!
Player of the Week story - This article gives a lot of information on Tim, including statistics and summaries of different years in his football career. Little known facts: Despite playing only three seasons with the Falcons, he is tied (with Deion Sanders) for the club record in punt return TDs, is second on their career punt return yardage list, and holds the all-time Falcons records for career kickoff return yards and combined return yards. Pretty impressive!
Article 2 - A Chargers.com article about last weekend's preseason game. Says Doug Flutie, "Tim made a great catch on a ball I had to put up early. I guessed and put it in a good spot and he went and got it."
Article 3 - Five observations from Chargers training camp, by John Clayton of ESPN.com. Clayton says about Dwight: "He's instant excitement."

8-12-01 --- Tim played in his debut game as a Charger on Saturday (8-11) in a 25-24 victory over the 49ers. He had one rush (for 27 yards) and two receptions (for 21 and 4 yards).

7-31-01 --- Click here to read an article (courtesy of Chargers.com) about Ronney Jenkins, in which Tim Dwight is briefly mentioned in reference to the Chargers' excitement about kickoff returns this season.

7-19-01 --- As the Chargers' training camp approaches (starts July 23), Chargers.com has published an interview with Tim Dwight, discussing his health, his outlook for the Chargers, and shaving his body. Check it out here.

4-20-01 --- Tim Dwight has been traded to the San Diego Chargers! On the eve of the 2001 NFL draft, the Chargers traded the first overall pick in the draft to Atlanta in exchange for Tim Dwight, the Falcons' fifth overall pick, a third-round pick, and a 2002 second-round pick. Read about it here, here, or here, courtesy of ESPN.com and NFL.com.
