The following figure (from Przybylinski and DeCaire 1985) shows four different types of derechoes, identified by radar reflectivity structure. The main distinguishing characteristics are the cells (or lack thereof) in front of and around the main system, the number (and magnitude) of rear inflow notches (RINs), and the reflectivity gradient along the storm front.
