EPA's Office of Wetlands, Oceans, and Watersheds is requesting applications from States, and other public or nonprofit organizations to help train and educate broadcast meteorologists on key watershed issues and to develop and explore new tools and mechanisms to convey environmental information to the public through local weather reports.

EPA anticipates an award(s) of up to $150,000 to carry out project activities.

This proposed project would consist of a blend of CBS television stations from Indianapolis, Indiana, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Louisville, Kentucky, with the Indiana State Park Interpretive Services to serve the general public with more exciting information about watersheds and weather in their local communities.

Project Idea:

Utilize the developing Indiana Mesonet to provide precipitation data for participating Indiana State Parks with watersheds.  Advanced computer programming will provide enhanced web components for users that will serve the public and media users.  Workshops will be held at participating [full-time] Indiana State Park Interpretive Centers for media professionals and broadcast meteorologists, where those centers will be equipped with seasonal and technological assistance for this project (which will include GIS technology to handle watershed and environmental monitoring information).  Participating facilities would receive a computer system for monitoring local environmental conditions, watershed conditions, and for interpretation.
