About Me
My research interests lie in a broad range of areas spanning meteorology and oceanography. Some of my specific interests include computational fluid dynamics (specifically, numerical weather prediction and climate modeling), severe weather, tropical meteorology, data assimilation, and coupled models of the atmosphere, oceans, and land surface. More recently, my research interests have expanded to include generalized rheologies, such as debris flows (e.g., landslides and mudslides) triggered by heavy rainfall events. This research has been tied to recent mudslides in Southern California, China, and elsewhere. Other rheologies include glaciers and ice sheets in Antartica and Greenland, and, for future work, lava and magma flows. My research has been funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Australian Research Council (ARC), the Department of Defense (DoD), the Department of Energy (DoE), and a range of other agencies.
I received my PhD in mathematics from Monash University in 1970, with a thesis entitled "On Rotating Flows." Afterwards, I spent a year as a postdoc in the Mathematics Department at the University of California, Berkeley, and became a Senior Principal Research Scientist at the Bureau of Meteorology in 1971. I was a Visiting Research Fellow at Imperial College London in 1976, 1979, and 1981, and a Visiting Research Scientist at the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1987. In 1994, I was appointed as a Chair Professor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where I founded and was director of the Center for Environmental Modeling and Prediction (CEMAP). CEMAP has now been absorbed by the Climate Change Research Center (CCRC), of which I have been a Visiting Professorial Fellow since 2011. I have been the Robert E. Lowry Chair Professor of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma since 2002, and a George Lynn Cross Research Professor since 2008. I have also been an Adjunct Professor at Curtin University since 2007, and a Faculty Associate at the Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (CIMMS) since 2012.
