Lab Exercise 6
Due Feb 27, 2004

The 1000-500 mb thickness analysis is extremely useful in determining the low level thermal advection patterns. This lab will familiarize you with temperature advection. You will complete the following tasks:

1. Use the 1000-500 mb thickness/surface pressure field map to highlight (shade) the areas of cold (blue) and warm (red) advection.

2. Use the 700 mb pressure field map to highlight (shade) the areas of cold (blue) and warm (red) advection.

3. Discuss the areas where the thermal advection patterns are similar on both maps and will combine to provide forcing for upward and downward motion.

4. How do the thickness contours compare to the isotherms at 700mb? How well does the mean 1000-500 mb temperature represent the layer?

5. For the first map, how can you use the Thermal Wind to tell if there is CAA or WAA at a particular area?
