'The Second International Workshop on the East Asian Monsoon (IWEAM 96): Joint Steering Meeting for KORMEX and HUBEX' was held in Seoul during 21-22 October at the Yonsei University Alumni Building, sponsored by Meteorological Research Institute (METRI). The objective of the workshop is to discuss implementation plans for 'Korea Monsoon Experiment (KORMEX)' and 'Huaihe River Basin Experiment (HUBEX)'. The primary goals of KORMEX include better understanding of the meso-scale rain-producing systems and enhancing prediction of heavy rainfall during the East Asian summer monsoon period.

KORMEX will be carried out with several other international monsoon programs, such as GAME (GEWEX Asia Monsoon Experiment), SCSMEX (South China Sea Monsoon Experiment), HUBEX, TIPEX (Tibetan Plateau Experiment), upon approval of the plans by the Korean government. The scheduled intensive observation period (IOP) is April-August 1998.

About twenty scientists were invited from China, Japan, and US. Also, a broad spectrum of Korean scientists from operational center, research institutes, and universities, in the fields of atmospheric science and hydrology, actively participated in the two day sessions of the workshop. The Chair of the IWEAM 96 Organization Committee is Dr Jai-Ho Oh at METRI.

The workshop covered many aspects of the East Asian summer monsoon, including the present status of the East Asian summer monsoon research and monsoon prediction, with major emphasis on the observation, communication, and meso-scale features of the monsoon. The workshop consists of the following six sessions:

  1. Outline of HUBEX/KORMEX and National Summer Monsoon Reports
  2. Monsoon Variability
  3. Numerical Modeling
  4. Intensive Field Observation
  5. Data Management
  6. Panel Discussion
