The National Space Development Agency of Japan is planning to cooperate with NASA on a new global earth observation and monitoring program. The initiative will extensively upgrade and reorganize Japan's current programs through the use of a supercomputer and global climate model-generating software. Six groups are being created to conduct six major R&D programs covering topics such as climate, ecosystem and global warming prediction. NASDA will be applying this summer for an initial 10 billion yen in funding for the first year leading to a 400 billion budget over five years. NASDA is in negotiations with NASA, NOA, and the US Department of Energy on how to coordinate research sharing and mutual cooperation. NASA and NASDA expect to set up centers of excellence and promote staff exchange.
