Current Status of KORMEX

In Korea, the summer rainy season is called Changma. It starts in late June and
lasts for about one month, and brings about 20-30% of the yearly
precipiation over Korea. Changma is a part of the east Asian monsoon
system, like Meiyu in China and Baiu in Japan. KORMEX is designed to
observe the large- and meso-scale features of Changma and is in
collaboration with GAME.
KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) has scheduled to make intense
observation during June and July and it is undergoing as scheduled.
KMA's observation plan consists of:
- Radar: 5 sites, 10 min volume scan
- Upper-air: 4 sites, 4 times/day (on GTS)
- Surface Observation: 24 times per day (71 stations)
- AWS (Automatic Weather Station): 1 min interval (400 stations)
- Buoy observations: 4 sites, every hour
Intensive field observation includes:
- METRI radar observation: June 20 - the end of July#
- Additional Upper-air soundings: 4sites, 4 times/day, 25 June-4 July
(10 days)
- One flux measurement (close to Seoul, forest area), the end of July
- One radiation measurement
#There are some problems with METRI radar and it takes some time to fix it.
It seems that summer rainy season in Korea finally started in 25 June and
Changma has not ended yet. We are planning to have another intensive
observation for 1999 summer, if possible. If anyone is interested in
KORMEX, contact Dr. Jai-Ho Oh (jho@iris.metri.re.kr) or Dr. Won-Tae Kwon (wontk@iris.metri.re.kr).
