Rain Records

[Chosun Ilbo, Aug. 9, 1998]

The recent heavy rain in and around Seoul and central Korea has rewritten many records in Korea's weather history. The 332.8mm of rain that fell in Seoul on Saturday was the highest in 78 years, the record was set on August 2, 1920 when 354.7mm fell on Seoul. Rainfall exceeded 400mm in some areas of Seoul.

The highest recording for a single day was 481mm set on Thursday, August 6 the highest ever was 547mm at Jangheung in Chungnam Province in 1981. However these records are for calender days, if records were taken for a single continuous period the 619.5mm that fell at Kangwha from 10pm to Thursday to 6am Friday would be a new record.

From Jan 1 - Aug 8 there has been 1,730mm of rain in the Seoul area which easily exceeds the 30 year annual average of 1,370mm.
