Two Asian Universities Run Real-Time NWP Models
Currently, two institutes in Asian universities are running mesoscale atmospheric models in real-time mode. Both real-time numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems are based on the NCAR/PSU MM5 model. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) might be the first university which started to run the real-time NWP system in Asia. It is an ongoing project in the Center for Coastal and Atmospheric Research (CCAR) of the HKUST and the forecast results are open to the public. Any interested party can view the results at their web page at http://sgi200.ust.hk/~fcstop/.
Another institute which runs similar real-time NWP system is located in Seoul, Korea. The NWP group (Prof. Dong-Kyou Lee) of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Seoul National University is operating the NWP system based on the MM5 model, which is substantially modified to fit to Korean environments. Their web page can be found at http://nwp2.snu.ac.kr:8080/. However, the forecast results are not open to the public (a password is required). Any interested individual can contact the webmaster at hskang@nwp2.snu.ac.kr.
