Dust Storm Sweeps Rajkot

[From The Times of India, 21 May 1999]

Fear gripped the residents of Rajkot as a severe dust storm swept the city on Thursday morning. Many people thought the cyclone was heading for the city. Visibility was drastically reduced and the wind speed was upto 80 km per hour.

The entire city got a coating of dust. Power system failed at a number of places spots and some telephones also went dead. The high humidity added to the suffocating atmosphere. Some hoardings were also blown off. However, no one was injured.

Those outside headed for their homes as the wind speed increased and the others stayed put within the security of their houses. The roads wore a deserted look and markets had few takers.
