SRNWP Workshop on Mesoscale Variational Assimilation
Mon 8th - Wed 10th May 2000
Met Office College, Shinfield Park, Reading.
(The college, next door to ECMWF, can provide meeting facilities and
some hotel quality accomodation).
Most operational NWP centres are planning or developing high-resolution (< 10km) NWP systems, for detailed local forecasting. In parallel most centres are developing advanced variational data assimilation systems for their larger-scale models. It is far from clear what is the best strategy for combining these developments!
This workshop will cover the main R&D issues concerning the development of variational (or alternative) data assimilation schemes for high-resolution short-range numerical weather prediction. It will be organised as a series of presentations of recent research, followed by parallel discussion groups on key topics. The groups will produce a summary of issues and current status for a final plenary session. Provisional topics are:
Based on the abstracts, a balanced selection of presented papers, and a revision of the working group topics, will be decided by the local organisers. Poster sessions, with time for discussion, will be included in the programme. Papers for inclusion in the proceedings can be submitted, in www compatible format, by the week before the meeting. These, and the reports from the working groups, will be published on the www soon after the end of the meeting (as were the papers from the previous SRNWP VAR workshop, at http://www.met-office.gov.uk/sec5/NWP/DA_VARcam96.html).
