The European Meteorological Society (EMS)
Arne Spekat
EMS Executive Secretary
After five years in the making, the European Meteorological Society was founded by some 20 Meteorological Societies from all across Europe on 14 September, 1999. These Societies have joined forces to achieve what individual Societies cannot do. They are doing it for the benefit of the peoples of Europe and, since it is a small world, for people everywhere. They will do so through the capacities of the Member Societies and of the dedicated individuals that Societies put forward to represent them. The EMS also offers a focal point for international contacts in meteorology and related sciences. Meteorology is seen as encompassing the science, day-to-day operations and applications.
The path ahead of EMS and into the 21st century is one of tackling a number of tasks:
- Advance meteorology (and sciences related to it) at a European-wide level.
- Foster communication to, from and between Meteorological Societies, e.g. by way of newsletters, web publications; this is by no means restricted to Member Societies.
- Seek contacts on many levels and to all related Societies for positive and synergetic relationships. Prominent among the key contacts being the European Geophysical Society, the American Meteorological Society, and the World Meteorological Organization.
- Promote the exchange of ideas and knowledge, access to conferences and meetings, and the exchanges of journals between individual members of Meteorological Societies, and potential members of all Member Societies
- Focus on co-organizing and organizing conferences, chiefly in Europe.
- Gather information on efforts in meteorological education in Member Societies and, together with them, derive a plan which builds on their efforts and which aims at action before the Madrid Conference on School and popular Education in 2003.
