KDP and Rain Estimation

The research, methodology, and data products presented on this dashboard are officially supported and funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Program Office (https://ror.org/01q70bz83) under the grant award NA25OAR4590232. This initiative, formally titled “Improving Specific Differential Phase and Rain Estimation through Optimized Use of Polarimetric Radar Measurements”, aims to significantly advance the precision of modern meteorological radar algorithms and enhance real-time severe weather quantification.

This secure portal serves as the primary distribution hub for high-resolution NEXRAD KTLX radar data, alongside its natively derived Specific Differential Phase ($K_{DP}$) and quantitative rain estimation products. The site is designed to rigorously benchmark the performance of existing, operationally deployed estimators against our newly engineered classification-based Linear Programming (LP) optimization approach. By seamlessly processing polarimetric variables, this advanced LP methodology isolates meteorological anomalies more effectively, yielding unparalleled accuracy in hydrometeorological modeling. Comprehensive evaluations of these analytical outcomes are currently being formalized for peer-reviewed publication in academic journals.

By utilizing the interactive calendar controls below, researchers and peers can instantly query our extensive archive of chronological radar observations. Selecting a specific date will seamlessly populate the gallery with all corresponding multi-dimensional radar grids tracked and processed during recorded convective events. While this dashboard facilitates rapid visual inspection via rendered imagery, the fundamental mathematical raw data structures generated by these algorithms remain fully preserved and are available to interested parties immediately upon direct request.
