DESCRIPTION: Introduction to atmospheric structure, elementary thermodynamics, synoptic meteorology and the use of computers in meteorology. Includes exercises in the use of meteorological data in weather analysis and forecasting, and the use of departmental computer systems to display and analyze meteorological data.

 

PREREQUISITES: Mathematics 2423 and Physics 2514. These will be enforced.

CLASS FORMAT:

Wednesdays: Lecture-based introduction to the Topic of the Week, Quizzes, etc.

Fridays: Conclusion of the topic lecture (if necessary) and in-class lab assignment

Mondays: Computing skills and assignments relevant to the topic of the week

 

GRADING:

In-Class Laboratory Activities (14) and Computer Assignments (14)

Announced and Unannounced Quizzes (~8) and Misc. Homework Assignments (14)

 

85% of the grade will be a linear average of the above-listed assignments (no drops)

15% of your grade will be the Term Project.

 

Note: Make-up allowances will be decided upon by the instructors on a case-by-case basis. Our advice? Don’t miss! We are not likely to give make-ups except in “extreme” circumstances. The instructors reserve the right to define “extreme” in each instance!

GRADING POLICY:

All provisions of the Norman Campus Academic Misconduct Code shall apply for both the academic setting and for computer use. Any violations of this Code will result in removal from the class and a grade of “F” recorded for the course.
